CULTURE AT SAUL GAC

Saul GAC has a rich history in the cultural aspect of the GAA. From the earliest days of the formation of Scór, Saul has been proud to take to the stage in a variety of competitions. Through the years, the club has been represented in every competition at either junior or senior level. The lady behind the birth of Scór in Saul was the late Phil (Philomena) Stratton who is known around the country for her dedication to Irish Culture. Many Scór goers and GAA enthusiasts the length and breadth of Ireland were saddened to hear of her untimely passing in December 2008.

ALL IRELAND SUCCESS

In 2008-2009, our junior ballad group, which Phil was very much a part of, sang a most poignant song – Remember Those Who Had to Fly away. There were emotional scenes in Silverbridge on 10th January 2009 as the Ballad Group lifted the Ulster title and were bound for the All Ireland in Athlone. This was were the Celi Dancers had their success in 1996 bringing the first ever All Ireland Scor title back to the club. The 5 girls went on the stage and there was no doubt that all the work that Phil and Gareth had put in together was going to shine through. There were emotive scenes when our wee club won the National title to rapturous and deserving applause. This was a special year as it was the 125 Anniversary of the GAA, 40th Anniversary of Scór and our Ballad Group had the honour of singing for President of Ireland Mary McAleese.

Little did we think that two years later we would be back in the National Arena with entries in two competitions – Solo Singing (Sarah McVeigh) and the Ballad Group. Sarah’s rendition of John Condon at the All Ireland Final was stunning but unfortunately she was knocked into second place. However, all was not lost as Sarah along with her 4 team members claimed the Ballad Group Title for the 2nd time in 3 years. What an achievement!

In 2016, our Senior Ballad Group and Reciter (Gareth McGreevy) claimed two Ulster Titles in St. Patrick’s Grammar School and went on to bring home the title in the Ballad Group category in the All Ireland Final in the INEC in Killarney on Saturday 2nd April 2016. This was particularly special for a number of members of the group who have been participating in Scór for the past 15 years and claimed their first ever Ulster and All-Ireland titles – it really made all the hard work worthwhile. Our All-Ireland Champion winning Ballad Group was Angela McGreevy, Catherine McGrath, Grainne Laverty, Katelyn Denver and Gareth McGreevy

Members of our Scor teams have gone on to grace bigger stages including Hannah Bradley going on to represent Sydney in The International Rose of Tralee live on RTE and Gareth representing the club on a TG4 programme Pitch Perfect where he sang live in Croke Park on All Ireland Final Day in 2011 at Dublin vs Kerry.

The cultural wing of our club has also has facilitated our members getting Gaeltacht scholarships through the County Board as well as fundraising for the local parish in 2008 with a large Charity event starring Ann Breen in The Great Hall, Downpatrick. We look forward to bringing further cultural activities to the club in the coming years as we develop the club as a hub for cultural and social activity in the local area.
