Senior Men suffered defeat at home to league leaders Clann na Banna on Friday past. In a match that held the crowd in suspense throughout, yet again a single point separated the sides. With never more than three points in it, it was the home side who went into that lead after half time, when they came out of the blocks fast. A goal from the south down men brought them back on level terms and they pressed on to get two points in front with ten minutes to go. The match at this stage was just one attack after another and both sets of defenders were putting everything on the line to stop shots being taken or runs being made. A sweeping move from Saul resulted in a fine goal from the impressive Calum Mahoney and Clann na Banna were behind again. Their experience of senior football over the past few seasons helped them grit their teeth and Malachy Magee in particular showed his experience as he drove them on and scored the winning point with two minutes to go. Saul had a couple of chances after this, but hurried passes, or wrong decisions meant that the scores didn’t come. This was a game that everything. High fielding, strong running and fierce tackling. Both teams deserve great credit for going out with the sole intention of playing football and gave the referee a relatively straightforward task as well. While the winners now sit impressively clear at the top of the table, the boys in blue must regroup and show that they can learn from this and get some more points on the board at home to Dundrum this Thursday evening.
U16 boys travelled to Liatroim and put in a decent performance against the home team. Best on the night were Shane O’Hare and Declan McComiskey, while Aodhan Harney in goals put in a good shift. Plenty to work on though as we move into the summer period.
