The awards just keep coming. Huge congrats again to our All-Ireland champion Ballad Group from last year. Gareth, Angela, Catherine and Katelyn (Grainne was there in spirit from London) were invited to and made the trip to Co. Monaghan on Friday night and to great honour on themselves, family and the club, were presented with the Ulster Gaa Writer’s Culture Award for 2016. A fantastic and well deserved achievement.
Sunday saw a very well attended 2016 Juvenile Presentation at the Saul Centre, directed by club secretary Mark McGrath. The timing did allow a review and recognition across all teams & their management that took to the field in 2016 from U12 Boys and Girls through to Minors but importantly also to focus on the upcoming season preparations which are already gaining momentum. The team’s mentors reviewed successes and improvements last year and plans going forward with medals and awards handed over by our own Pierce Laverty who had the honour of captaining the county minors last year and is currently with the Down U21’s. A particular highpoint of a great afternoon to a crowded hall, came in the the form of Saul legend Martin Fitzsimons and a selector for the the Down All-Ireland winning side of 1991 presenting the Fitzsimons Shield (in honour of his late wife Eileen) to the top juvenile player of 2016. The award for 2016 deservedly went to Jamie Morgan who’s determination and drive to be the best were highlighted as key attributes for all our players to aspire to in 2017. Well done to all who took part – bring on this season’s challenges. (See below for photos)
After the successful registration which followed Sunday’s presentation event, the remaining members – seniors and adults plus U10s, new members and anyone who missed out on Sunday have a final chance to signup/renew membership next Saturday (4th Feb) between 11.00a.m to 1.00 p.m. in the Saul club rooms.
P2-P7 training for boys and girls begins this Saturday at the pitch from 10.30-11:30am. All children very welcome. Need to be prepared for the elements! Anyone who can help with coaching, please let Mark know this week.
Sincerest condolences to family and friends on the death of Ciara McGreevy. Ciara played for our senior ladies team and also represented the club on the county squad a few years ago. Ciara was an extremely popular, committed and gifted player who made a massive impact during her time with the club. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a hanam.
